I am mildly behind partly because I spent half the weekend with a minor-enough case of food poisoning. More annoying than anything, because I did have things I wanted to do. The other half was the hobby market, which was kinda slow and while I at least made table, I wish I could sell a few of the larger things. Ah well.

Other than that, I am making decent progress with the Blue Estailev. I have the upper body/head/arms together, and am working on a leg. (I'll try to add a decent picture later; the one I have has a half-built arm and looks a little macabre.)

Posted by aninfiniteweirdo

“The activities of fan translators and distributors can be explained with the conceptual tools drawn from the existing literature (e.g. working consumers, consumers put to work, consumers co-creating with producers and consumers as a source of innovation). Yet, this paper tries to draw attention to the fact that the above participatory consumers are undertaking tasks of cultural intermediation that are essential to bring a cultural product to an overseas audience, i.e. the tasks of reproduction of the original product, translation and editing, mass-production, advertising and promotion, and dissemination. (…) However, recent years has seen the decoupling of manga scanlators from their initial support for the market economy of translated manga production and distribution. This has come with the globalization of scanlation production and consumption and with advanced digital technologies and communication tools. Due to the wider penetration of online networks around the globe, the English scanlation community has expanded to include many fans – either scanlators or their viewers – outside the USA. (…) What can be noticed by now is that scanlation created huge “missing markets” of digital manga on a global scale. (…) The industry views these missing markets as something that can be transformed into its markets once the viewing of scanlated manga is discouraged. However, it is not known to what extent this can happen given that the missing markets are a product of manga fandom and have served as a significant part of the fandom itself.”

Witch so-called pacing check: complete!

The meant-to-be-just-a-pacing-check-except-not-really cleanup is DONE! VERY anti-climactic because of the unexpected month break right before the end XD The soul thief revision plan is good to go I think, and maybe I knew this time I was happy with it because my mind immediately switched to "finish up the witch remaining work, then we dig into the actual revisions." I even have a tracking spreadsheet ready!! AND I made a chart this time! I learnt about secondary Y axis and how to attach a data series to it so it scales properly! Lol. There may be PICTURES in my next recap XD I'm kind of planning 3-4 months for those revisions, but it's the first time I go so deep during the structural phase so I have no idea how it will go. The witch only took ~14h, but the changes were a lot simpler (to my detriment, since I ended up having to make large structural changes 3 rounds of revisions later based on beta-reader feedback. Ouch!) Very eager to find out how it will go this time!! And feed data to that chart >:D

I was so excited about my little chart that I decided to make one for the remaining scenes of the cursed witch's pacing check, too. 18 scenes left. It took me nearly 1h30 to fix up that first scene because it was a fight scene that dragged a lot. Slow, slow, slooooow. So I figured, 18 scenes, 2-3 weeks to do it! I can copy my scenes-per-week chart, with a dot for each week! Well. The pacing check was intended to be light. Only the big, you know, PACING problems. Of which there were fewer in the following chapters, so I finished it all up in several feverish sessions over a 3-day weekend 🤣 MY CHART IS A SINGLE DOT. This is so funny. If I'd known it'd go so fast, I probably would have tried to squeeze it alongside the workshop, but maybe I just needed a break.

Anyway, it was a happy surprise to return to the witch and enjoy it! I've learnt a fair bit about structure during the last month, and while -- as I feared -- I do see all the places that I would handle differently now... I don't hate it, nor feel anguish at how much better it could be? I dunno. Although, the dark side of taking yet another long break is that I feel so refreshed that I could smash myself against another round of editing... I could. Forever over and over, possibly. But I do need to learn when to move on, too.

So what comes next? )

Laundry antics.

Every three months, I swap my sheet set. Living alone and showering daily means I don't need to change my sheets more than once every two weeks, and they get swapped out for the next set every three months. Four in total. It's not quite one-to-one with the seasons, but the sentiment's close enough.

In doing the laundry, I found out two of the machines were broken. Someone else was trying to use them, and without either of us knowing what was happening - the spin cycle's not working for the moment - I suggested she try seeing if it'd work to press the main "on" button again. It ran through another cycle without paying, stopping at the point it'd otherwise spin. I'd suspected as much, so I came prepared. I went to the laundry room with an extra roll of quarters because I know how much of a pain in the ass sopping laundry is, and any feelings of having even accidentally contributed to that to someone were ones I wanted to banish through direct action. Which was why I had the extra roll: I gave them to the person who'd been unfortunate enough to use the machine a second time, on my suggestion. She was agog, astonished, and after loading up a working machine, offered to give me back the $3.25 she hadn't used.

"Buy yourself a cup of coffee," I said.

Letting Go

Anime VHS Tapes from My Library
Anime VHS Tapes from My Library

I’ve been reorganizing storage boxes in the garage, and today I got to a section of anime storage boxes. There are a lot of cool – but useless – memorabilia. I have a lot of magazines and publications that I can’t yet bear to part with – Newtype, Newtype USA, Manga Max, Protoculture Addicts, Animag, Animerica – and more. There are booklets from the early days of Anime Expo and Kumoricon. Also, I have printouts of email correspondence from fandom in the 1990s, including fansubbers. I reboxed the items (from old, limp bankers boxes into the new, sturdier ones from the remodel) and put them back onto the storage shelves.

However, there were three bankers boxes of VHS videotapes. And I’ve decided it’s finally time to discard them. All they are doing now is taking up valuable space – and I no longer can play VHS videotapes, anyway.

Bankers Boxes of Anime VHS Videotapes
Bankers Boxes of Anime VHS Videotapes

I unloaded the boxes for the group photo at the top of this post. The photo will be the only record of that collection once the tapes are gone.

Memories of the days of anime fansub exchange are precious. Some of the correspondence I kept brought back memories. (I had a good relationship with well-known fansub champions Bruce and Karen Duffy, who lived just outside of Salem – an hour from Portland – and who I actually got to visit a time or two. Trivia: Piro of Megatokyo fame did some of the illustrations for the Duffy’s fabulous VHS tape labels – for the Marmalade Boy series, I believe.)

As far as the commercial VHS tapes go, I think I have DVDs or Blu-rays of all of those series. The only anime VHS tapes that are withheld from this purge are my Gunbuster VHS tapes. My Gunbuster collection is sacred. And of course, the Gunbuster tapes weren’t in the boxes in the garage anyway.

So... sayonara, VHS collection. I’m letting go of the 1990s – finally!

Submissions for Vidder's Choice now open!

Submissions for Vidder's Choice are now open (Premieres and Themed Premieres coming soon)! Before we get into how to submit a vid, just a quick note to say that while we still recommend Firefox as your go-to browser, at this point you should be okay using most other browsers. However, we recommend iPhone users not use Safari Mobile to submit vids.

tl;dr

The name you enter in the vid submission form must match your username.

We don't support 4K vids.

When adding new sources/audio, fine to just add the title. Clicking "Submit" will take you to a page where you will add more complete info.

Maximum of 25 sources/songs when submitting. You can add more later once the vid has been submitted successfully.

Eligibility

You must be registered for VidUKon to submit a vid. If you haven’t yet registered, you can do so at vidukon.org

There are three submission-based vidshows: Vidder’s Choice, Premieres, and the Themed Premieres show. At the moment, you will only see the option to submit to Vidder's Choice on your Dashboard, but submissions to the Premieres and Themed Premieres shows will open soon. As the names imply, Premieres and Themed Premieres must be new vids that have never been posted publicly or shown at a con or similar event. Conversely, Vidder’s Choice vids cannot be premieres. Additionally, Vidder’s Choice submissions must be no longer than four minutes and thirty seconds in length.

Technical specifications

Please follow these if possible, as it makes it easier for us to set up the virtual vidshows. However, we do not want these specs to be a barrier to submission for anyone – if you’re having trouble, please contact us.

File format: MP4

Video codec: H264

Max video bitrate: 7-8 Mbps

Max resolution: 1080p

Audio codec: AAC

Max audio bitrate: 256 kbps

If you don't know how to follow these guidelines: If your vid is roughly under 350 MB and definitely not 4K, go ahead and upload it. If it’s not 4K but well over 350 MB in size and you don’t know how to reduce the file size, please contact us.

Please do not upload 4K vids. We don't support 4K on the platform, so your vid will be converted to 1080p and will likely end up with bleached colors, since that tends to happen with automated conversions from 4K to 1080p.

How to submit your vid

Please note that the name you enter in the vid submission form must match your username. If you chose a different username when you registered than the name you vid under, you can change it by going to your Profile and clicking on "Manage".

To submit a vid, go to your Dashboard, which will display all vidshows you can upload to. This is also where you will manage existing submissions. Click on “Submit”. This takes you to the page where you will enter your vid's details. You will see options to either select a vid from the database (any vids shown at last year's con), or to add a new vid. If you're adding something new, fill in all fields and hit "Submit".

If any sources, audio or vidders don't appear in the drop down, you can add your own. It's fine to just add the title of the source/song, as once you click on "Submit" you will be taken to a new page where you can fill in more details, such as media type (eg Movie, TV/Streaming, Commercial), full title in its original language, media year, etc. If you added a new vidder, you'll get to check that the details are correct here too. You'll also have the option to remove any entry in case you added it in error.

If you're uploading a multifandom vid, you can add a maximum of 25 new things per field at this stage. If your vid contains more than 25 sources, don't worry! You can add the extra sources once the vid has been submitted by using the "Manage" functionality.

In the description field, please enter a brief description of your vid. This doesn’t have to be comprehensive; for example a common approach is to choose a lyric from the vidsong that is particularly evocative of the vid, but it is also fine to write something like, “A Dylan G. character study” or “All the f/f ships in Xena”. Be as creative or straightforward as you like, but please keep this brief as every vid description has to fit in our printed conbook!

Please tick any of the mandatory content notes that apply to your vid. For custom content notes, you may provide additional detail about any of the mandatory notes as well as add any non-mandatory notes, e.g. warnings for spiders or snakes.

At this point you can hit "Submit", which will take you to a page where you can check and add more details to any new sources or audio and remove entries if needed. Make sure to hit "Save Sources & Continue" as well as "Save Audio & Continue" before clicking on "Submit All", which will take you to the page where you'll upload your file.

Here you can upload your vid and you also now have the option to upload subtitles (VTT or SRT format). You will also need to enter your password, so keep that on hand if it's not saved to your browser.

Once you've selected your files, click on "Upload". This might take a few minutes so don't navigate away from the page. Once complete you'll be redirected to your Dashboard, with a message to say you've successfully submitted your vid. You will now have the option to update your submission, either uploading a new file or updating info, including adding/removing sources/audio or updating the description or warnings.

You can add new uploads, and edit all other details of the vid, up until the submission deadline

Recent theater

Saw Suzy Eddie Izzard's one-woman Hamlet at the STC (hosting the DC stop on her international tour), which really was a remarkable piece of theater— just watching anyone recite the entirety of Hamlet basically without pausing for breath would be impressive in itself, but this was, in fact, genuinely a really good performance of Hamlet. Given her comedy background, it's unsurprising she killed it at the more comedic parts— Polonius, the gravediggers, Hamlet's mad scenes; for 90% of the characters, she literally moved from place to place around the stage to embody each different role, but Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were mimed as hand puppets, which got a big laugh every time— but as she explained in a pre-show introduction, as Shakespeare progressed from comedy to tragedy through his career, so has she (and "if you're expecting a comedy version of Hamlet, you are going to be sorely disappointed"), and her dramatic turns were equally compelling. This production (understandably!) trimmed the script a little, but did keep in the entirety of the Norway subplot, which is usually the first thing to get cut, so that was an interesting touch. The set was, basically, a white box— a sort of stage-within-the-stage, she mostly performed within the box but stepped out/in front of it, to the "real" stage, to deliver soliloquies* directly to the audience**— and there were no props, only the occasional miming of interacting with things: there was scattered laughter the first time, when her Hamlet mimed pulling his sword for Horatio to swear on, but let me tell you, you know that an audience has been enraptured when when miming Hamlet licking Polonius' blood off of his hands elicits a collective gasp.

* Hamlet's, obviously, but also as Ophelia and Gertrude, which I don't think I've seen other productions emphasize as such?

** In a fun fourth-wall-breaking moment, Hamlet addressed the audience as if they were the players in Act 2, Scene 2— I've seen another production use that scene to break the fourth wall by having Hamlet direct his "keep an eye on the king" instructions to the audience instead of to Horatio, so I thought that was a fun touch.

pretty stream of thought here

Happy Easter to those who celebrate! I do not but my store closes early so I get to leave early. That's very nice, aaaahhh. <3 I'm trying SO HARD hard to not waste my mornings before work, so I'm updating DW and also watching a Smosh video.

I've finished a Chris/Leon fic, I just need to go back over it and make sure there aren't too many egregious grammar issues. I don't care about, like, purposefully fucking around with grammar (I love commas and semicolons) but I don't want a simple typo to ruin the vibes, you know?

Aaahhh, okay. I have less than an hour until my shift starts. I'd better start getting ready. ;o; I have Wed-Fri off next week due to WEDDING ANNIVERSARY and I'm just trying to make it until then.

OH ALSO I GOT BIT BY A DOG YESTERDAY. Immediate bruising, a little blood, and swelling, but today it seems to have calmed down.

Weekly proof of life, Easter-in-name-only edition

We're not observing Easter in any way, other than being grateful for the four-day weekend (today being the third day). The work crunch continues, so this reprieve is a real mercy. (Am I starting a rewrite after this post? Yes. But I did take yesterday fully off, and Friday's work consisted only of reading through this translation.)

Reading: Very, very little, although I've been picking away some more at Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts: Stories and Recipes from Five Generations of Black Country Cooks.

Watching: The main thing is that, since the crunch has not kindly wrapped up, I've given up on my initial notion of holding off until it's over to start season 2 of the live-action One Piece. [personal profile] scruloose and I are two episodes in. (If we'd decided to actively dedicate the weekend to it, we could've watched the whole thing before Tuesday, but have opted against that.) No Chopper yet. *vibrates*

Weathering: Yay for spring and all that, but so far it's a very Nova Scotian spring--a lot of the province had a bunch of snow and ice on Friday, with more of the same today. We're mostly getting very chilly rain here, which is bad enough.

Meat-puppetry (kinda): Within the last week or two, the length of my hair went from "this is more effort than I like to keep it off my face, but hey, having a ponytail is still novel" to "IT'S TOUCHING ME MAKE IT STOP", and thankfully Ginny was up for chopping it (mostly) all off last night when she and Kas were over. It's now back to being VERY short without the drastic step of simply buzz cutting it; there's even enough length at the front that some of it's still dyed from (I think it was?) December. Such a relief.

(Ginny cuts her own hair, Kas' hair, and my hair, and mine is veryvery different from either of theirs--dead straight and slippery and, although I didn't know this until I was at least in my thirties, very thick despite being very fine. So when she does my hair, there just keeps being more of it, even with a quarter or a third of it buzzed right down in an undercut, and it slides away from whatever she's trying to do with it. On top of that, I only actually get her to do it maybe twice a year, so she doesn't really have a chance to get used to my hair, but she gamely makes it work anyway and I appreciate it. ^_^)

All 13 Members Of SEVENTEEN Renew Contracts With PLEDIS Entertainment

Posted by waves_of_light

All 13 members of SEVENTEEN have officially renewed their contracts!

On April 4 and 5, SEVENTEEN held their “SEVENTEEN WORLD TOUR ‘NEW_’ ENCORE” concerts at Incheon Asiad Main Stadium, marking the grand finale of their world tour.

During the second and final show on April 5, leader S.Coups personally shared the news for the first time, announcing that all members had completed their contract renewals with PLEDIS Entertainment.

This marks SEVENTEEN’s second full-group renewal, following their early contract extension in 2021.

S.Coups shared, “Thinking about how there won’t be group concerts for a while made me look back on the past 11 years.” He continued, “As many of you probably know, SEVENTEEN is approaching something important. We felt it was only right to share this with you [before] CARAT LAND, so I’m speaking on behalf of the members.”

Mentioning members currently serving in the military, he added, “At a time like this, even though Jeonghan and Wonwoo are here, I wish Hoshi and Woozi could be here too.” He concluded with the heartfelt announcement, “After having deep conversations among ourselves, all 13 of us decided to renew our contracts. We’ll stay on the same ship and keep rowing forward together with all our strength. Thank you.”
